Part of the Gainsborough Healthcare Group, Abacus is a specialist UK manufacturer, supplier and installer of power-assisted bathroom solutions for children and adults with reduced mobility. At OTAC Midlands, the proven Gemini 2000 platform bath, with unique in-built antimicrobial technology, will be available for individual demonstrations. The 2m long Gemini is the largest bath of its kind which provides a future proofed choice for disabled children and adults, as well as healthcare professionals involved in bathing assessments for domestic settings and special schools. In addition, Abacus will provide its latest assistive bathing CPD education, which forms part of a free nationwide CPD training programme in collaboration with The OT Service.

Synopsis

Support for bathing, particularly in adults, is often focused on medical need rather than occupational ‘want’. This session will consider the clinical reasoning behind bathing and medically focused evidence base, including skin conditions and pain, as well as perceptions around when bathing is not appropriate due to diagnosis.

Learning outcomes

  • Reflection on the perceptions about who can bathe and why
  • Consider the impact of specific medical conditions on bathing
  • Critically analyse the application of occupational therapy core beliefs
  • Understand the relationship between bathing and occupational performance
  • Develop greater understanding of equipment available to support bathing as a meaningful occupation

On stand 15, visitors will be able to discuss individual client cases with an Abacus Regional Assessment Manager in order to establish meaningful occupation for clients within the bathroom setting. Evidence-based case studies and DFG guides, will be available to take away, as well as details regarding ongoing CPD education available through the Abacus Academy.
