Free CPD-accredited Seminar:  Bathing – a right to play
Kate Sheehan DipCOT, Occupational Therapist, OT Service Director

4th July, 11:30am, Seminar Theatre.

Synopsis: Play, along with the basic needs of nutrition, health, shelter and education are vital to develop the potential of a child according to the United Nations. In the UK, many children play at bath time yet it is not often a primary consideration within an Occupational Therapist’s recommendations during the assessment process. This session will explore “play” as an occupation and consider how legislation and clinical reasoning can be used to support the necessity of a bath in the design process.

  • Have an overview of “play” as an occupation
  • Be able to list the relevant legislation to support bathing
  • Explain how clinical reasoning can be used to support the necessity of a bath in the design process

Part of the Gainsborough Healthcare Group, Abacus is a trusted manufacturer of quality power-assisted baths for disabled bathers. Complemented by a reliable service and comprehensive assessment-led approach, Abacus is regarded as a leader in accessible bathrooms and ergonomic bathing. It is also committed to an ongoing educational programme for professionals and families which will be highlighted at Kidz West. In addition to supporting Kate’s seminar, a selection of free case studies, guides regarding bath funding, steps-to-ownership and legislation will be available from Abacus – all helping to empower OTs and parents when seeking an assisted bath. Funding via a Disabled Facilities Grant can be challenging hence Abacus provides the necessary information and advice to support this process.

In between her seminar, Kate will be available on the Abacus stand to discuss individual cases and offer potential solutions to a variety of care scenarios. Using the Gemini 2000 platform bath from Abacus, she will be able to clinically demonstrate how safer transfers and bathing can be achieved through appropriate product functionality. The Gemini 2000 for example, the largest specialist bath of its kind in the UK, provides a unique dual lift action and integrated platform which delivers multiple safety and comfort benefits. This future-proofed solution, with built-in Biocote antimicrobial protection, provides adaptable bathing for a variety of conditions and is flexible to meet changing needs.

Continuing the educational theme, a Regional Assessment Manager will be on hand to take bookings for the free Abacus ‘Lunch ‘n’ Learn’ and Assisted Bathing Workshops that are available across the UK. Whether professionals are looking for basic bath training or more theoretical knowledge regarding accessible bathing, then Abacus can provide a course to suit. Kate and the OT Service work in partnership with Abacus to deliver this programme to groups of OTs, Physiotherapists and Moving and Handling Practitioners at any suitable location of choice.

All professionals and parents attending the stand have the opportunity to win the Abacus cuddly mascot, Trevor the Turtle, for their young clients or own disabled child.
